Japan Expresses Commitment to Working with Cambodia on Myanmar

TOKYO: Lieutenant General Hun Manet, the Deputy Commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army and appointed successor to Prime Minister Hun Sen, met with the Foreign Minister of Japan, Hayashi Yoshimasa, in Tokyo on Monday, where Japan affirmed its commitment to work with Cambodia to resolve the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa stated that Japan and Cambodia have a strong relationship and thus Japan welcomes close cooperation on the matter of Myanmar, as well as on other regional, Indo-Pacific affairs.

The Foreign Minister further praised the visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, the current chair of ASEAN, for his positive efforts to resolve the situation and alleviate the crisis in Myanmar, which has been considered a civil war by UN experts.

Lieutenant General Hun Manet is on an official visit to Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Government. The invitation was relayed to Prime Minister Hun Sen on 28 December 2021 through the Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Mikami Masahiro.
